RADO

Formed in 1917, Rado initially produced watch movements only. In 1957 the company launched its first collection of watches under the Rado brand. In 1962 the Rado DiaStar, the world's first scratch-proof watch, was launched. Since then Rado has pioneered the use of a number of high-tech materials, e.g., ceramics, lanthanum and sapphire crystal. In 1983 Rado became part of the SMH group which was renamed in 1998 as the Swatch Group.

People automatically connect the name Rado with watches of individualistic design made from scratchproof materials. While other brands use conventional materials like gold, brass or steel, Rado goes for materials of the future such as high-tech diamond, high-tech lanthanum, sapphire crystal, hard metal or high-tech ceramics. And this is always in the endeavor to develop design/material combinations that unite in perfect harmony the double functions of the watch as a modern piece of jewelry and a functional timepiece. The basis for this is provided by the mastery of highly developed leading technologies for the manufacture and processing of the hardest materials in the world.

 Rado watch

It has taken decades for Rado to build up this know-how, which today constitutes the core expertise of its material-technological developments for its beautiful timepieces.

The abbreviation “V10K” stands for Vickers 10,000. Vickers is a scale of hardness used particularly in diamond-related technology. The scale goes from zero to 10,000 Vickers – the ultimate value for genuine diamonds and thus the yardstick for everything else. This top value appears even more special and exclusive when it is known that the stainless steel normally used in the watch trade has a Vickers hardness number of only 200, which makes it 50 times "softer" than diamond.
