MOVADO GROUP

Movado is a Swiss watch manufacturer, whose name is Esperanto for "movement" or "Always in motion". Movado was founded in 1881 in La Chaux de Fonds  by Achilles Ditesheim a 19 years old entrepreneur who hired six watchmakers and opened a workshop. Some of the most famous timepiece ever created are the 1912 Polyplan, the WWI Soldier's Watch with its protective grill or the 1950's Kingmatic series of rotor driven automatics and of course the legendary Museum Watch (1947) with its single dot at 12 o'clock representing the sun at high noon, an icon of Modernism.

Gerry Grinberg, the founder of the actual Movado Group, a true watch passionate rescued the Movado watch company in the 80's. Grinberg fled from Cuba; he survived his ordeal with the Castro's secret police and escaped with his family to the United States, where, against all odds, at the age of 30, he began selling impossibly expensive watches successfully. He transformed the luxury watch business in the USA. He  became one of the makers of the modern watch world. He is well known for his crucial role in building the fledgling Piaget brand in the 1960s and '70s, his rescue and revival of the Movado brand in the 1980s and '90s.
