In 1847 Louis-Francois Cartier took over the workshop of his master in Paris. Cartier is prospering and moved its main store into Rue de la Paix, one of the most expensive street in Paris.

In the beginning of the past century, Maison Cartier becomes the most prestigious jewelers. In 1904, Louis Cartier created the first wristwatch (the Santos) for his friend, pilot Santos- Dumont who beat the flight record that year with a 220 meters flight. Soon after, the wristwatch 'Tonneau' conquered the world.

In 1964, the heirs sold the businesses of Paris, London and New York. Cartier is presently owned by the second largest luxury goods company in the world; The Richemont Group.
