Breguet is a French fine watch-making establishment, founded by Abraham
Louis Breguet in 1775.
Among its clients, Queen Marie-Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte,
Talleyrand, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Caroline Murat, Tsar
Alexander I of Russia, Queen Victoria, Sir Winston Churchill and Arthur
Rubinstein who put their confidence in the taste and artistry of
Breguet.
Currently part of The Swatch Group, it is one of the oldest surviving
watch-making establishments and is the pioneer of numerous watch-making
technologies, the most famous being the Tourbillon, invented by Abraham
Louis Breguet.
A
Tourbillon movement was designed to counter the effects of gravity and
other perturbing forces that can affect the accuracy of a chronometer.
The effects of gravity were particularly problematic when pocket watches
were carried in the same pocketed position for most of the day. The
Tourbillon is considered to be one of the most challenging of watch
mechanisms to make and is valued for its engineering and design
principles. Modern implementations typically allow the Tourbillon to be
seen through a window in the watch face. |

Developed
in 1954 by Breguet for the French Air Navy, the mythical Type XX earned a strong
reputation of reliable and resistant timekeeper in its military versions. In
its latest civilian versions, the model Type XX became a symbol of sports
elegance as a high performing chronometer watch. For its fiftieth anniversary,
the house Breguet created the modern Type XXI watch in 2005. This new Breguet
chronograph is distinguished by its fly-back function enabling the chronograph
to be reset by simply pressing the push-piece, and a centre minute counter. The
black rhodium dial with the brand signature features luminescent hands and
hour-markers, a day/night indicator at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter, date window
at 6 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock. The self-winding numbered movement
is also signed.
